WHERE DOES AC REPAIR BEGIN?
Try to begin testing your air conditioner at the thermostat. Put the thermostat setting on cool and set it lower than actual room temperature. If you feel that it is too hot, you might have forgotten to put the setting on your thermostat on 'cold' position. Even if that is the only problem, the technician will charge you for the sevice call.
1. Check if the air is coming into your room.
If it is not, you have to check if the fan on the outside air conditioner unit is running. If it is not, try to make sure that the breakers for the air conditioner handler are on.
In case the breaker is not tripped, check your thermostat. If it is ok, then check the furnace control board, and only after that the wires between the furnace control board and the thermostat.
If the HVAC unit has condensate pump, check the reservoir to make sure it is not full of water. If the reservoir is full, a limit switch may block your AC from running. You will probably need to repair the pump.
If you found that the breaker is tripped, try to reset it: turn it off and then put it back in the 'on' position. But if it happens again, you might need to check all your wire system on the furnace control board and the AC unit outside. In this situation it is better to call furnace / AC repair company, because it is very hard to find the short-circuit.
Another problem could be when the blower motor at the outside AC unit is running but the blower inside your furnace is not. The problem is most likely in the
control board or the furnace fan motor. Check in with a Qualified technician.
Sometimes when a unit is on, it blows hot air inside your house. First of all, check if the outside AC unit is on. If it is on and the outside blower is running, your air conditioner, most possibly, needs a shut of freon.
If the blower outside isn't running but the blower inside is, you need to check your blower module, capasitor and if there is power to the AC unit or fuses. And I suggest to start with turning on the power to the air conditioner unit and check
If the contactor closes or not. When the AC doesn`t want to start, you need to check the reset button. In some units you can find a pressure switch which could be reset. After that take a voltmeter and check the power to the unit to see if there is 24 volts to the contactor's coil. In case there is no power to the AC unit, check the wire connections on the electric panel. It should be 24 volts to the contactor. After that go to the thermostat and check the low voltage wires coming from the furnace control board to the Air conditioner unit. If there is power going to the AC contactor and the AC unit is not starting, the contactor needs to be replaced.
Another problem is when the compressor starts but the fan motor doesn`t. The reason is most likely to be that the AC blower module needs replacement. The opposite situation is when the blower is running but the compressor is not. In this case, the compressor needs to be replaced.
You can see ice or water around your furnace? Just turn off your unit for a couple of hours but leave the furnace blower in running position. The ice is going to melt. After that, start the AC unit again and run it for 10 minutes. Then check by hand the big copper line at the outdoor AC unit. If it is cold and there is condensation, everything is working fine. But if the copper tube is not cold enough or if the frost is starting to form, you have a freon leak problem. The best thing to do would be to call an AC repair company.
Sometimes the unit provides litte cold but it is not enough. Usually, in this situation you can see that the blower motor and the compressor are working. What you have to do is check the temperature coming from the system. But make sure the unit has been working for 10-15 minutes prior to taking temperature measurements. The normal temperature is around 14-16 degrees Celsius. But if your AC is old, the normal temperature would be 19 - 21 degrees. If you have 22 degrees and higher, you need to check the freon pressure in your system
